Jayden Wareham hat-trick in vain as Exeter and Peterborough share spoils

Exeter striker Jayden Wareham bagged an eight-minute hat-trick during an entertaining 3-3 draw at Peterborough.

Wareham cancelled out Patryk Sykut’s opener and then put the visitors 3-1 ahead but Harry Leonard’s brace ensured a share of the spoils.

Sonny Cox fired over from close range early on for Exeter before Ukrainian teenager Sykut marked his first start for the club with a fine goal in the 17th minute.

City stopper Joe Whitworth kept the deficit at one as he produced a good save to keep out Jimmy-Jay Morgan’s free-kick.

There was a crazy start to the second half with four goals in the first 15 minutes.

Moments after the restart, on-song hitman Wareham met Ilmari Niskanen’s cross to head home the equaliser.

Wareham put the visitors in front six minutes later as he stabbed home Jack Aitchison’s pass and completed his quick-fire treble when he fired in his 17th goal of the campaign.

Leonard pulled one back for the hosts on the hour as he flicked Cian Hayes’ corner home.

Carl Johnston saw his stinging strike tipped over the bar by Whitworth but Leonard levelled with a header with 11 minutes to go after Morgan did well on the wing.
