LIMERICK City and County Council has officially commenced the development of a Local Sports Plan aimed at increasing participation in sport and physical activity across the city and county.

This initiative aligns with the Government’s National Sports Policy 2018–2027 and is supported by Sport Ireland under Action 8 of the policy.

The Local Sports Plan will assess current needs and outline targeted actions to foster a more active and healthier Limerick

It will be developed in collaboration with key stakeholders including the Limerick Sports Partnership, local clubs, schools, community groups, leisure centres, and public service committees such as the Local Community Development Committees and Children & Young People’s Services Committees.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, welcomed the initiative, stating; "Sport and physical activity are vital to the wellbeing of our communities. This Local Sports Plan is a significant step in ensuring that everyone in Limerick, regardless of age or ability, has the opportunity to get involved and stay active."

Príomh Chomhairleoir, Cllr Dan McSweeney, emphasised the collaborative nature of the plan; "This is about breaking down barriers and building bridges between clubs, communities, and service providers. The Local Sports Plan will be a blueprint for inclusive, community-driven participation."

Director General of Limerick City and County Council, Dr. Pat Daly added; "We are proud to take a leadership role in this important work. By working closely with our partners and the public, we aim to create a plan that reflects the needs of our communities and supports long-term participation in sport and physical activity."

Declan White, Acting Director of Services for Regeneration, Sport & Recreation, highlighted the importance of public input; "We want to hear from the people of Limerick. Your voice matters in shaping a plan that works for everyone. Whether you're a coach, a parent, a student, or someone looking to get more active, we encourage you to take part."

Members of the public are invited to contribute their views through an online survey available on the MyPoint platform at Limerick.ie.
