FAI JUNIOR CUP:

Hyde Rgs 3 Ballynanty Rvs 1
Hyde Rangers pulled off the shock of the season to date by knocking Ballynanty Rvs out of the FAI Junior Cup in a thrilling cup tie at Hyde Park on Sunday.

The Premier A side went into the tie as underdogs but turned in a superb team performance restricting the Premier side’s attacking threat.

The visitors had plenty of possession but could not break down a Hyde side in which their back four were excellent.
The was only five minutes on when Hyde took the lead. Nathan Walsh’s throw in was headed clear by Balla but only as far as Jonathan Somers who looked up and from midway inside the half, fired a shot to the roof of the net.

Balla nearly had an immediate response when James Fitzgerald played the ball across goal but Eddie Byrnes shot from six yards was blocked by Hyde keeper Tibor Voćanec.

Hyde were not sitting back and Ben Kennedy went within a whisker of making it two but his shot was inches wide.
The Hyde striker was not to be denied and in their next attack he latched onto Darragh Reddan’s through ball to fire across Balla keeper Christy Lynch to the net.

The goal woke Balla out of their slumber but the best they could offer was a long-range effort from James Fitzgerald that was saved by Voćanec and near the break Josh Adams challenged the keeper in the air and the ball fell to Byrnes but from close range his shot was deflected for a corner.

Balla were out of the traps quickest in the second half and Darren Lawlor got on the end of James Fitzgerald’s cross but headed straight at the keeper.

Hyde made the miss prove even costlier on the hour mark when Somers headed clear and Evan Shine’s first-time ball put Ben Kennedy through and he kept to his nerve to fire in to make it 3-0.

Balla pulled one back when he headed Fitzgerald’s cross over the line to give the Premier side some hope but a red card minutes later saw Balla reduced to ten and with it their hopes of advancing.

As the game petered out It was Hyde who looked more like scoring with Dylan Bourke, Calum Murphy and Kennedy all going close.

As stated, it was a team effort for Hyde with each and every player doing their bit.
That said, a special word must go to the experienced Jonathan Somers who typified the spirit that brough victory.

It is a bitter blow for the Blues who are now out of the National and Provincial tournaments as well as the Tuohy Cup, all before Christmas.

There is no doubting the skill and ability in the side but they need a leader to gel them together. With the League and Lawson still up for grabs, that leader needs to step up asap.

Inter-County Youth Trophy:

Limerick DL 0 Clare DL 0
The Limerick DL youth side suffered a blow to their hopes of advancing past the group stages when they were held to a scoreless draw by their Clare opponents on Thursday evening.

After being stung by a late equaliser in their opening game in Kerry, a win was the hope to get their challenge back on track. They play Waterford in the final group game but passage is now out of their own hands.

Limerick had their chances but found the Clare goalkeepers up to the challenge.

An early free kick from Darra McNamara forced a full length save from Clare keeper Leon White.

The net minder was to the fore again keeping out a shot from Cathal Downes and before the break a clever dink over the top by Andrew Kearney put Alex Keating in on goal but White was again sharply off his line to smother the danger.

Clare improved after the break and had a great chance to take the lead but Dylan Howard blazed over from six yards out and a last gasp tackle by Kearney stopped the lively Darragh Hayes from getting in on goal.

Limerick nearly snatched it at the death when the ever-willing Keating broke clear of the defence but Finn Murphy (who had replaced the injured Whyte) made a superb save to ensure the game finished scoreless.
