LIMERICK’S senior hurlers play their opening game of the 2023 Allianz Hurling League on Saturday when they play Cork in Pairc Ui Chaoimh, 7.30pm.
All-Ireland champions Limerick have been stepping up their preparations for their trip to Leeside since they completed their Munster Hurling League campaign with a comfortable win over Kerry.
John Kiely’s side have already faced the Rebels this year in their opening game of the competition, which resulted in a one point loss in Pairc Ui Rinn. Much interest will centre around how Limerick approach the league following mixed results in the competition over the past two years. In 2021, Limerick lost to Galway and Waterford, beat Cork and Westmeath and drew with Tipperary.
It was an underwhelming performance in the 2022 league as well, with just one win over Offaly and a draw with Clare accounting for Limerick’s three points.
The league run was included defeats to Wexford, Cork and Galway. However, Limerick’s ultimate goal of winning the All-Ireland was completed in both seasons.
Limerick used the Munster Hurling League to give game time to a number of fringe players. Speaking ahead of the league start, maanger Kiely said that his charges, while in a good place, have a lot of work to do.
“We have quite a lot of work to do in the next 10 days. We just hope that everybody keeps on the trajectory that they are on, it’s a good one.”
The Limerick manager was non commital about who could be available for the start of the league, adding: “We will have to wait another 10 days before we are in that space.” Limerick’s game with Cork is live on RTE TV.
Elsewhere, as exclusively revealed by Leader Sport on Friday, Na Piarsaigh will have a familiar face back in charge after club sources confirmed that Shane O’Neill will again take over their senior hurling team.
O'Neill is a former player with the club and was at the helm as manager when they won the All-Ireland club title in 2016. He also led the club to the All-Ireland final in 2018, losing to Cuala after a replay. After leaving Na Piarsaigh, following that defeat to the Dublin side, he then took over as manager of Galway in November 2019.
In O'Neill's first season in charge, Galway reached the All-Ireland semi-final but lost to Limerick. He will succeed Kieran Bermingham in the role.
