ST Munchin's College honoured past pupil Declan Madden who is the current President of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) at a special event.
Acknowledging the achievement of the Limerick-born IRFU President, St Munchin's College say that his dedication and contributions to the sport of rugby have been exemplary, and 'his journey from a student at St Munchin's to a leading figure in Irish rugby is a source of immense pride for the entire school community.'
In a special ceremony held at the Corbally college, Declan Madden was honoured for his 'outstanding accomplishments and his unwavering support for the school'.
The event was attended by students, staff, alumni, and distinguished guests, all of whom celebrated Declan Madden's achievements and his ongoing commitment to promoting rugby at both the national and grassroots levels.
St Munchins College also honoured past pupil Michael Carroll on his Presidency of the Munster Branch 2023-2024. Michael Carroll was a Senior Cup winner in 1968.
The College also honoured Mr Bredan Foley, current President of the Munster Branch 2024-2025. Brendan Foley coached junior cup teams previously and watch his son Anthony (Axel) don the blue, red and black.
Brendan Foley’s grandsons have and are attending the college.
During the ceremony, IRFU President Declan Madden also had the honour of officially launching St Munchin's College's annual Golf Classic. This highly anticipated event will take place at the prestigious Castletroy Golf Club on Friday, May 2.
The Golf Classic is a key fundraiser for the school, with proceeds going towards enhancing educational facilities and supporting extracurricular programs. It provides much needed additional funding for the College Sports Fund so that it can continue to promote the participation of the college’s teams in many different sporting activities including rugby, basketball, hurling, Gaelic football, athletics, and many more.
This year once again, had strong runs in both the Munster Schools Senior & Junior Cups, playing some fantastic rugby throughout. Two of the college seniors (Oisin Minogue & Tom Wood) have gone on to represent Irish U20 level this year also. It is also great to see a number of new faces togging out for Munster and securing professional contracts (Shay McCarthy, Kieran Ryan, Gordon Wood).
Hurling & Basketball continue to go from strength to strength with substantial investment being made by the school into both in terms of financial resources, facilities and coaching hours.
Principal, Shane FitzGerald stated “The Golf Committee are delighted to have the Junior Cup Team of ’98 coming in as our main sponsor this year- great gesture from a great bunch of lads.”
