RICHMOND are Munster Junior League champions with one game to spare following 32-26 win over Thomond in their Limerick derby at Liam Fitzgerald Park on Friday.
The victory, Richmond's thirteenth of the season, ensured a place in the All-Ireland Round Robin series with the hope of promotion to the All-Ireland league for next season.
As expected, Thomond ran Richmond very close in the game, with the Rhebogue side needing a late James Reeves try that Tadhg Bennett converted to seal the win.
Richmond struck first with a Keelan Stephenson try but three penalties from Thomond's Adam Guerin saw them hit the front. However, two Bennett penalties saw Richmond 11-9 up late in the first half.
A converted Jeffrey McNamara try extended Richmond's advantage to nine points but Thomond responded with a Jack Cosgrave try of their own. Guerin added the extras to see the score at 18-16 in Richmond's favour at the break.
Jordan Dillon bagged a third try for Richmond in the second half that Bennett converted but Thomond hit back through Dean McGinn. A conversion and penalty from Guerin then turned the game in Thomond's favour.
However, Richmond were not to be denied. Reeves got their fourth and bonus point try and with Bennett's conversion, Richmond earned a six-point winning margin. Richmond host Clonakilty in their final game of the regular season this Sunday at 1pm.
