Three significant projects move forward with support of Limerick mayor

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran has approved three community projects including road safety works in Patrickswell and potential new housing in Cappamore

THREE separate community projects are moving forward in Limerick following support from the mayor, including the assessment of new housing in Cappamore.

Mayor Moran has signed a Mayoral Order appointing external quantity surveying experts to undertake a cost-plan review and verification for a potential Limerick City and County Council turnkey housing scheme of five three-bedroomed houses at Dromsally Woods in Cappamore.

If these units proceed, the project will be funded under the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage’s Social Housing Investment Programme.

Mayor Moran has also ordered the commencement by Limerick Council’s Active Travel Team of the works on the traffic calming and other road safety measures at Lisheen Park in Patrickswell. These will improve the safety of locals and especially children going to and from Patrickswell National School.

The proposed works to be carried out include a raised pedestrian crossing at Lisheen Park, build outs for traffic calming purposes, footpath widening and a new bus bay.

The works are taking place as a result of consultation with Patrickswell National School and following a site visit during drop off and collection times, where it was noted the current existing pedestrian crossing at the school’s car park entrance is unsafe.

Mayor Moran thanked councillors Kilcoyne and McSweeney and colleagues at Limerick Council for their support in bringing this project to life.

The mayor also approved the signing of legal agreements between Limerick Council and a non-profit entity to enter a property into the Mortgage to Rent Scheme in an area in the Cappamore/Kilmallock Municipal District. The Mortgage to Rent Scheme is overseen by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and administered by the Housing Agency.

Owners who are having difficulties with mortgage arrears, instead of losing their home, voluntarily surrender ownership of their home to a new mortgage owner but remain in place as tenants, in this case, renting their home from Limerick Council.

Mayor Moran said: “I want to further thank the team within our Housing Directorate for their part in saving this family from homelessness. These three examples are three very different projects but together, they demonstrate one thing: action.”

“Limerick is continuing to move forward. We are investing in people, in communities, and in a future where no one is left behind.”
