Councillor PJ Carey has raised a query regarding the Local Sports Plan, developed jointly by Limerick City & County Council and the Limerick Sports Partnership, with particular focus on whether there are plans to develop a Community Field in Kilmallock.
In response, Fiona McCormack, Senior Executive Officer with the Council’s Regeneration, Community, Sport & Rural Development Directorate, confirmed that under the Government’s National Sports Policy 2018–2027, all local authorities are required to develop Local Sports Plans.
These plans are designed to review community needs and outline actions to increase participation in sport and physical activity across the county. A consultant has been appointed to support the Council in preparing a five-year strategic plan for Limerick.
As part of the process, a series of public consultations and workshops were held across the city and county. From these, key themes have emerged including encouraging active communities, developing sporting spaces, enhancing places for activity, strengthening communication, and fostering partnerships.

The draft Local Sports Plan 2026–2030 is currently being finalised and will be presented to the Community, Leisure, Arts, Heritage and Culture SPC before being considered at a full Council meeting in the first quarter of 2026. McCormack noted that it is too early to provide specific details, including proposals for a Community Field in Kilmallock.
However, further public consultation will follow, and all submissions received will be taken into account. This plan represents an important step in shaping the future of sport and community activity in Kilmallock and across Limerick.
