Stronger action to tackle ongoing illegal dumping in Limerick

AT THE January meeting of the Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District Councillor Martin Ryan called on Limerick City and County Council to take stronger action against ongoing illegal rubbish dumping in the Cappamore and Murroe areas.

The councillor highlighted that dumping has been occurring continuously over a long period, causing environmental and community concerns. In response, the Council confirmed that the district has a dedicated Environmental Officer (EO), supported by the Litter Team, whose role is to prevent and control litter under the Litter Management and Waste Management Acts, applying legal sanctions when necessary.

The EO conducts weekly patrols, investigating reports of illegal dumping and addressing problem locations. Large-scale dumping triggers full investigations and coordinated clean-ups under the Anti-Dumping Initiative.

Since 2024, the team has been authorised under the Circular Economy Act to install CCTV cameras in areas with persistent dumping, where their use is proportionate. Community engagement is also central.

The Environmental Awareness Officer collaborates with Tidy Towns groups and Green Schools, promoting correct waste disposal and encouraging local communities and businesses to keep Limerick clean.

Councillor Ryan welcomed these measures but stressed the need for ongoing vigilance to ensure Cappamore and Murroe remain litter-free.

Aldan Finn, Senior Engineer, confirmed that enforcement and awareness efforts will continue in 2026.
