'He was one of a kind': Tributes paid to Army corporal found dead at Curragh Camp

Tributes have flooded in for an Army corporal who died suddenly at the Curragh on Friday evening.

In a statement to media, the Defence Forces confirmed 'with great sadness' that the death has occurred of Corporal Terry Smyth of the Army Ordnance Corps, on Friday, September 6.

The 32-year-old father of two was found "in an unresponsive state by his colleagues" at the Defence Forces Training Centre, Curragh Camp.

A native of county Kildare, Cpl Smyth joined Óglaigh na hÉireann in 2011 as a Recruit in 5 Infantry Battalion, and had 13 proud years of service with Óglaigh na hÉireann.

He served in a number of appointments with the 7 Infantry Battalion, 1 Mechanised Infantry Company, the Military College, Defence Forces Physical Education School and the Ordnance Corps to name a few, and also served on peacekeeping missions overseas in Lebanon and Syria.

"Óglaigh na hÉireann have lost a fine colleague and a better friend, Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, Lieutenant General Seán Clancy, stated.

"All of us in Óglaigh na hÉireann extend our deepest sympathies to the family and the friends of Corporal Terry Smyth and to all those who were lucky enough to have known him, in whatever capacity that it was.

"He will be sorely missed but never forgotten. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis"

Tributes and sympathies have also poured in on RIP.ie, from former colleagues and those who knew Cpl Smyth and his family.

"He was one of a kind, the biggest smile, the happiest hello and he would never pass you by without a beep and a wave, or a stop to say hello," one tribute read. "We will hold onto the many memories we have of Terry."

"To all the Smyth family on the sad loss of your son Terry," another one, signed 'Army family' read.

"To his partner Stacey his children parents and siblings our heartfelt condolences on such a sad loss. Such a kind and gentle man he will be sorely missed by so many.

"Look after your loved ones Terry from heaven."

Cpl Smyth is survived and "sadly missed by his loving partner Stacey, daughter Regan, son Fallon, parents Terry and Audrey, brothers Eoin and Connor, sister-in-law Grainne, Connor's partner Lynda, Stacey's parents Ann and Jim and the Pender family, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours, friends and Army colleagues."

He will repose this Sunday afternoon at his residence from 2pm, concluding with rosary at 7pm.

Removal will take place on Monday morning, September 9, to arrive at St. Brigid's Church, The Curragh for Requiem Mass at 10am.

Cremation afterwards in Mount Jerome Crematorium at 1pm.

Terry's funeral mass and cremation service will be live streamed and can be viewed on facebook.com/TheCurraghChurch and mountjerome.ie/victorian-chapel-service.

Family flowers only please. Donations if desired to "St. Brigids Hospice", donations box in church.

May he rest in peace.
