A motorist who allegedly broke a red light while eating a kebab was later found to be more than four times the legal alcohol limit, gardai have revealed.

Details of the detection, which was made in Waterford city in the early hours of this Thursday, have been highlighted on social media.

"Gardaí in Waterford city were on overnight patrol when they saw the driver of this car stopped at a green light, eating a kebab before he then proceeded onwards when the light went red," read a post on X, formerly Twitter.

"Back at the station, he tested over four times the legal drink-driving limit," added the post.

According to photographs posted online, the driver of the white Peugeot 508 had a concentration of 99 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml of breath - almost five times the legal limit of 20mg.

Gardai have not disclosed the exact location of the detection and they have not indicated publicly if legal proceedings will be initiated against the driver.

If convicted before the courts, the motorist faces a disqualification under the Road Traffic Act.  

The social media post highlighting the detection has been viewed more than 4,000 times.
