Gardaí are investigating an alleged assault after an incident at an U15 hurling championship match in Waterford on Monday evening.

The match involving Ballygunner and Na Risigh at Mount Sion was abandoned amid chaotic scenes as players and people who entered the pitch from the sidelines allegedly engaged in an altercation.

Footage of the shocking incident is being shared widely on social media. Neither club has commented on the scenes while Waterford GAA is awaiting the referee's report.

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said that: "Gardaí are investigating a reported assault at a sportsground in Waterford city on Monday evening, July 15, 2024.

"Investigations are ongoing."
