Reports suggest that up to 4,000 sheep are killed or seriously injured in dog attacks every year
In a ‘one in a million’ event, a ewe in Co. Meath gave birth to quintuplets over the Easter break.
Gus Martyn, a matchmaker and farmer originally from Co Galway, has been sheep farming all his life, and his ewes have previously produced quadruplets and triplets before, but never quintuplets, a supposedly rare event.
In an excited call to Joe Duffy on Liveline, Martyn explained that his ewe had birthed three female and two male lambs on Monday 25th March, all of which are healthy. "The mother's feeding them and being cared for herself aswell", Martyn explained.
Martyn owns both the ram and ewe that produced the rare five lambs. According to the farmer, the ram had previously conceived several triplets and twins in the past year. Martyn bought the three year old ram online, calling him Tinder "because I'm a matchmaker".
Martyn announced that the lambs, affectionately christened "the quins" by Joe Duffy, will be making an appearance at his local upcoming Dunderry Fair on 12th May.
