Man who admitted to having sex on historical landmark is fined

The walls of Derry

A man who was caught having sexual intercourse on a historical landmark, was also found to have a quantity of drugs on him the local Magistrate's Court heard today.

28-year-old Jonathan James Elliott, with an address at Ravensdale Street in Belfast, admitted a charge of indecent behaviour in a public place - The Derry's Walls, Co Derry, on February 1 this year.

When police investigated they came upon the defendant and a female and also noticed a strong smell of cannabis.

A subsequent search uncovered cannabis, Pregablin and Benzodine. At interview, the defendant made full admissions to the sexual intercourse charge.

Defence solicitor Derwin Harvey said that the Derry Walls had seen some historic events over the years but did not think this would rank as one of them.

He said that Elliott had believed he was in 'a discreet place' on the Derry Walls and regretted his actions.

The solicitor said that to add to 'his humiliation and shame', someone had videoed it and that footage had gone viral.

Elliott was fined a total of £500.
