An Irish woman accidentally ordered a £1,890 cocktail - thinking it cost £18.90 - while staying at a lavish five-star hotel in London.

Lynsey Bennett and her husband were enjoying a few days in London for New Years when she mistakingly ordered the costly cocktail at the hotel bar.

Recounting the tale in a viral TikTok video, Lynsey explained: "We had been to the theatre, gone out and enjoyed a nice meal. We were a little bit tipsy when we got back to our hotel and walked into the bar.

“So I ordered a cocktail which was called 1890 and I thought that was the cost of it, £18.90. So the young chap brought a bottle of Cristal, popped open the Cristal, gold leaf, 30-year-old Cognac, gave me this huge book to sign and there we were thinking we were the bee's knees.

After receiving the hefty bill, her "furious" husband left the bar leaving Lynsey to deal with it on her own.

Lynsey then approached the barman, explained her price mix-up and apologised profusely, calling it a "genuine mistake". Both she and the barman began to panic before the "discreet and so wonderful" hotel manager was called over.

Much to Lynsey's relief, the manager played it down, told her "not to worry about it" and to enjoy the rest of her stay.

Unfortunately for Lynsey however, the incident occurred on the first day of their five-night stay at the unnamed hotel. To add insult to injury, she revealed she "didn't even enjoy" the whiskey-based £1,890 cocktail, admitting she doesn't like whiskey.

Despite the ordeal a few nights previous, Lynsey and her sister dared to return to the hotel bar on New Year's night where they encountered the manager once again. When she enquired about the barman who had served her the cocktail, the manager joked that he'd "sacked him".

"After that, we actually sat with the manager and enjoyed drinks with him and his family and it turned out to be a really great New Years," she said.

"But I will forever check the price of cocktails from now on."
