Hole dug by group of lads on Irish beach mistaken for meteor strike on national news

A CASE of mistaken identity took place at a coastal town this Wednesday evening, as a mysterious hole with a rock inside, thought to have come from "up above", has been debunked.

A tweet, posted this Wednesday, accompanied by a news segment by Virgin Media, captured nationwide attention, as it showcased an enigmatic hole on Portmarnock beach.

The mysterious formation appeared to be more than just a simple depression in the sand, prompting intense discussions on its origins and the possibility of a celestial connection.

According to the segment, local astrophysics enthusiast, Dave Kennedy said: "is certain that the heavy rock inside it came from up above."

Dave explained the alleged scorch mark on the rock: "That would have been the angle it came down at," he said, motioning the rock's descent in his hand.

Speculation ran wild online as social media users pondered the possible causes of the mysterious hole.

While some locals have suggested that it may be the aftermath of a cosmic event, it was later found that it was merely the man-made result of an exciting beach day.

One video, posted this Thursday, which was screen recorded from an Instagram story, showed a small group of men digging the hole with green spades last Saturday.

Memes and humorous posts flooded Twitter, turning what was once a cosmic curiosity into a nationwide anecdote.
