Mundy to perform in intimate Limerick venue

SINGER-songwriter Mundy will perform in Limerick this weekend.

Mundy, who is well known for his song July and for his rendition of Steve Earle's Galway Girl, will be playing a repertoire of old and new songs in CASK, this Saturday, July 29.

In March, he released his latest single, Underneath Vesuvius.

Speaking of the track, Mundy notes: "I probably about 15 years ago. It’s a song that I kind of never did anything with, but it kind of came back to me. I did a demo with a friend of mine a few years ago and it really turned the song around to something epic, and my friend Gavin did a demo of it, and then I started making an album with him."

"Then we found this sample of famous Italian singer called Caruso. He was kind of like a Pavarotti from the early 1900, you know? I mentioned him in the song and then we found some of his music that actually was in the same tune as my song, so we decided to put it in there at the intro of the song and near the end."

How did he find revisiting a song after a decade or so?

"The song is very cinematic and photographic in that you can really see the images. So for me, it didn't really lose any of its intent. I think I'm still very proud of the lyrics, even though it was from a different time.  I could really sense being there and that feeling," Mundy said.

Is there something people should know about him?

"My guitar playing is something that probably people don't really know about. It's really what I wanted to be before being a singer was to be a guitar player," he admits. "I love to play the guitar and I think guitar gets overlooked sometimes. Me and some friends were in second year or third year of school. We all used to teach each other and show each other different techniques."

His rendition of Galway Girl is one of the songs he is most known for. Does he ever get tired of playing it?

"For a while I did because people wanted to hear it straight away. Also, it’s the only song of mine that's really in that genre. So I found it hard, but now I'm very comfortable playing it. And I look at i as a diamond in my sense," he says.
