Cllr Ursula Gavan raised concerns over parking outside a number of third level colleges in Limerick, including Mary Immaculate College at South Circular Road
MAYOR John Moran has said he will discuss a city-wide traffic management campaign, with illegal parking around Limerick’s third level colleges a major concern.
Independent councillor Ursula Gavan has called for the mayor to work with council director general Dr Pat Daly and the gardai to come up with a plan to alleviate the issue of drivers parking on pavements, and across people’s driveways among other things.
Councillors have previously raised concerns at this practice taking place around the University of Limerick (UL) campus with its students parking outside college grounds in estates.

But Cllr Gavan says there is the same issue around the premises of Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) on the northside, and Mary Immaculate College in the city centre.
“We are losing an opportunity to have a city-wide campaign as we are ignoring TUS, Mary I and University of Limerick residential areas which suffer,” she said.
She also pointed out parents collecting or dropping children from schools in the morning and evening peak also suffer as a result.
“We need an enhanced campaign around ‘think before you park’ coupled with a review of existing areas to see if there is scope for additional parking spaces to be created plus additional resources from the gardai and traffic wardens which will bring greater enforcement,” she said.
In a written response, Mayor Moran stated: “The concerns you have raised are completely understandable, and it is clear the impact of inconsiderate parking continues to cause issues for many residents around the city.”
He pointed out traffic wardens issuing fines often slap a ‘Think before you park’ information sticker on the car.
