It’s hoped the new strategy will boost traffic safety measures
COUNCILLORS have put in place a traffic calming policy in a bid to boost road safety across the county and city.
At the full council meeting, members approved the measures which aim to provide a uniform approach to the implementation of traffic calming measures across the city and county.
Council says the strategy is aimed at improving comfort and accessibility for public transport, cyclists and pedestrians.
It’s also designed to control speed to a level appropriate for activities taking place on a particular carriageway.
Another aim is the enhancement of the built environment, as well as reducing noise, disturbance and anxiety.

It’s aimed to improve driver awareness of vulnerable road users, and influence the behaviour of motorists.
“Limerick City and County Council will adopt a pro-active approach incorporating speed assessment and speed control measures at the pre-planning stage with designers and developers. It will assess all planning applications for new residential and commercial developments from a speed control perspective,” the council wrote in the strategy.
The local authority has also pledged to work with the gardai to implement measures which help calm traffic within towns and villages.
“In essence and in time, it is Limerick City and County Council’s ambition to have towns and villages become self-regulating. This can be facilitated by undertaking capital works such as public realm upgrades to the existing streetscape,” the council document concludes.
