Gardaí in one county were busy over the weekend as they caught multiple bad-behaved motorists on phones, speeding and with no insurance.

Cavan road policing units were deployed in a few locations across Co Cavan on Sunday, where checkpoints and speed guns were used to catch motorists speeding and texting.

Gardaí attended one collision between a HGV and a number of cars in the Kilcogy area.  They also conducted MIT (mandatory intoxicated checkpoint) in Shercock and Kingscourt.

As well as this, four motorists were caught speeding on the N3 and were issued fines. One person was travelling at 145kph in a 100kph zone.

Among those caught, one person was driving and texting. Upon further investigation, it was found that the driver had a cancelled insurance policy. The driver's car was detained.

Other fines were issued to unaccompanied drivers and those breaking other mobile phone offences.
