Investigations are underway after a number of houses were destroyed following a fire on the southside of Limerick city this morning.

The alarm was raised at around 8.30am after smoke was seen coming from a derelict house at Palm Court, Keyes Park in Southill.

Several units of the Limerick Fire and Rescue service attended the scene of the blaze which completeletly destroyed a block of three terraced houses.

A water-tanker was also deployed and fire service personnel used a skylift as they extinguished the fire.

Crews from ESB Networks also attended the scene to disconnect the electricity supply.

According the neighbours, the three houses were vacated before Christmas and had been derelict for around three months.

Garda at Roxboro Road are investigating the circumstances of the fire.
