THERE are plans for more ashes plots in County Limerick amid an increasing number of cremations locally.

Independent councillor Brigid Teefy submitted a written question ahead of the February meeting of the Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District.

Cllr Teefy asked if there are any plans for more columbarium walls or ashes plots in the municipal district in light of the increasing number of cremations.

In a written response, Senior Executive Officer Sonja Reidy said that Limerick County Council is aware of the need for such facilities in the area.

Ms Reidy said: “The council is aware of the need to provide for the interment of ashes in several of its cemeteries due to an analysis undertaken as part of the Burial Ground Interment Strategy.

“As a result, the council is providing columbarium walls or ashes plots in some cemeteries.

“The decision on whether to provide a columbarium wall or ashes plots or a combination of both is largely dependent on demand in a particular location based on population density and associated costs.”

She went on to say that in the Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District, the council has already identified an area for a small number of ashes plots in Ballinagaddy and Abbington.

Ms Reidy concluded by saying that the council will make a provision for columbarium walls and ashes plots as part of any new cemetery in the district.
