Limerick town hails “fantastic festive weekend” after packed Christmas programme

Huge crowds, sold-out events and widespread praise follow town’s Christmas lights switch-on celebrations

Limerick town hails “fantastic festive weekend” after packed Christmas programme

Kilmallock has been praised for delivering a “fantastic festive weekend” after crowds turned out in force for the town’s Christmas celebrations.

Cathaoirleach of the Kilmallock–Cappamore Municipal District and chairman of the Town Centre First committee, Greg Conway, thanked the community for their support following what he said was a hugely successful programme of events across the weekend.

A strong family focus was evident throughout the weekend, with Santa Claus and his elves proving a major hit with children. One of the standout moments saw the Grinch “arrested” and taken away in a squad car adorned with flashing lights, drawing laughs and cheers from younger festival-goers.

Speaking after the festival, Mr Conway paid tribute to the many groups and volunteers who helped make the celebrations a success, including Limerick City and County Council, Mayor John Moran, the Town Centre First committee, local traders and organisers.

He also acknowledged the work of John McCarthy of DMAC for putting the Christmas lights in place, along with the support of the Gardaí, the fire service and the Red Cross.

The Christmas market attracted large crowds, with many stalls selling out on the day, while the popular breakfast with Santa also proved fully booked. A sports day held on Sunday was described as a huge success, while other events included a historic town walk and a dart and pool tournament held in Houlihan's pub rounding off what Mr Conway described as a packed, varied and festive schedule.

Mr Conway said the level of turnout and community involvement showed the strong appetite for events that bring people together in the town, and confirmed that feedback from traders and families alike had been overwhelmingly positive.
