Swimmers cautioned as second beach popular with Limerick tourists closed

The blue flags at these bathing areas will be removed until the water quality improves

CLARE County Council has today (July 17) issued a warning urging the public to avoid a well-known beach, popular among Limerick tourists.
On the advice of the HSE, an advisory notice has been put in place at Whitestrand beach in Doonbeg, with the advice being not to swim until further notice.
This news comes just one day after a bathing prohibition was issued at Lahinch beach for the same reason.

The restriction has been introduced after the results of routine bathing water samples showed elevated levels of bacteria present at both Whitestrand beach in Doonbeg and Lahinch beach.

Run-off from the catchment after exceptionally heavy rainfall is believed to be the likely cause at the two sites.

In accordance with An Taisce’s blue flag programme, the blue flags at these bathing areas will be removed until the water quality improves.
