Limerick TD helps launch new Irish political party

A NEW political party called Independent Ireland has been formally registered with the election authority.

The new group aims to have Cork South-West TD Michael Collins as its party leader and Limerick TD Richard O’Donoghue as its general secretary.

The Electoral Commission has approved the new party to run candidates in general, local and European elections.

The group will only become Ireland’s 27th political party after a 21-day appeal period lapses, or after the outcome of any appeals.

The formal notification was published on Friday in the official Irish State gazette, Iris Oifigiuil, the Electoral Commission said.
