Hospital-based auctioneer Gerald Mitchell is set to be elected as the new Mayor of Limerick, as the pendulum of power at the top of council swings back to Fine Gael
IT'S THE time of the year on council when a bit of musical chairs takes place and the roles change around.
We’ve already seen new chairs of the four districts elected.
Now, this Friday, the most high-profile position of all will change hands.
Hospital-based auctioneer Gerald Mitchell is set to be elected as the new Mayor of Limerick, as the pendulum of power at the top of council swings back to Fine Gael.
He is set to succeed Fianna Fail councillor Francis Foley in the job.
And Patrickswell Fine Gael councillor Dan McSweeney is in line to become deputy mayor.
Councillor Mitchell, elected at the second attempt in 2014, will become the final mayor of this term, and potentially the last ever mayor which the councillors elect from their own number.
That's because plans are in train for an executive mayor, directly elected by the people of Limerick.
Councillor Mitchell will likely take the chain of office after a deal was done at the start of this council which saw both Fine Gael and Fianna Fail carve up the big roles between them.
Friday's AGM of the local authority will take place at the council chamber at County Hall, Dooradoyle
