A CRITICALLY-acclaimed film that meditates on the role of music is to make its US premiere.
Described as a “catalyst for change,” Out of Place is a documentary about the meditation on the role music plays in building community, exploring the tensions that emerge when musicians struggle to carve out a space for themselves in their city - in this case, in Limerick city.
Through an intimate portrayal of a local music scene of place captures the incredible diversity of cultural activity happening in the Treaty City.
Exploring music made at a local level, the film follows a variety of musicians as they try to navigate their changing city, in an attempt to find places to create, perform and connect with others.
This proves difficult as space provided for culture is always shrinking, turning the act of music-making into an act of defiance.
The film by Féile Na Gréine and directed by Graham Patterson features performances from Denise Chaila, God Knows, Hey Rusty, His Father's Voice, MuRli and Post Punk Podge & the Technohippies.
Filmed with a DIY spirit, Out of Place is both a celebration of music as form of individual and collective expression.
Last November, the critically acclaimed film was nominated for Best Documentary at the Irish Film Festival in London.
Following a successful screening tour around Ireland last February, Out of Place hits stateside for its US premiere as part of the official selection of Vermont Film + Music Festival in June.
On June 28, director Graham Patterson will speak to Capital Irish Film Festival director Maedhbh Mc Cullagh in an online Q&A.
Speaking of the film, Director, Graham Patterson said: “Making Out of Place was a journey of discovery. In conversation with the artists, I quickly learned that this wasn’t the full picture, as we explored the challenges and struggles they’re faced with as independent musicians in Ireland”.
