The Limerick Ladies footballers are seeking to regain their Munster senior ‘B’ championship title this weekend in Mallow.

The Treaty Ladies overcame the challenge of Cork ‘B’ in their Munster final group game in Ballyvourney two weeks ago. It sets up the chance for Limerick to win back-to-back provincial titles after defeating Cork ‘B’ in last year's decider.

Limerick joint-manager Seán Kiely spoke to the Limerick Leader about the mood in the camp heading into this weekend's final in Mallow.

“The mood in the camp is very positive, it's a very competitive panel and they're a very close bunch as well so the mood is good,” he said.

Kiely is delighted with the sheer amount of games his side have played coming into this weekend's final. “Obviously the couple of wins leading up to the final have been a massive help so overall really happy and there are still plenty of selection headaches, everyone is pushing each other which is what you need at this level,” he said.

Kiely also stressed how important the provincial championship has been to the side this year and how the lack of games had hurt them in the past.

“Not having a Munster Championship in the past was very hard, it's tough to keep the panel hungry without a provincial championship.

“I was here in years where you didn't have that and it was an absolute disaster to be honest, it was disheartening, but to have these games and a Munster final to look forward to is perfect preparation for the All-Ireland series,” he said.

“The amount of games and preparation we've had going into this has been massive, it's been a game changer. I think we've been out nine or ten weeks in a row now and we actually really enjoy that as there's no substitution for playing games,” he added.

Limerick's reward is not only a chance to retain their title but also to gain revenge against final opponents Clare for their defeat to a last gasp goal in the opening round of the group stages, a game that finished 0-6 to 1-4.

Joint-manager Kiely is aware of the threat that Clare will pose and is unfazed by going into the game as potential underdogs.

“Clare are going to be favourites and we're ok with that,” he said.

“They've been playing at a higher grade than us for the last few years, playing intermediate and Division Two league football so that'll probably make them favourites on the day but as I said, that won't bother us,” he added.

The impact that back-to-back provincial titles could have is not lost on Kiely and the Limerick squad.

“Any time a Limerick team lifts a bit of silverware it's always going to be a big boost to the county,” he said.

“We're always mindful of the underage structure in Limerick as well and the boost that it would give to them to see a senior ladies side doing well and competing in finals,” he concluded.

Limerick's game with Clare will act as the curtain raiser on Sunday before Kerry and Waterford take to the field at 2.30pm in the TG4 Munster senior championship final.
