The late Michael 'Mick' Noonan
THERE has been widespread sadness in recent days with news of the passing, after a short illness, of well-known Limerick soccer stalwart Michael (Mick) Noonan, Ballysimon.
One of the pillars of Limerick Junior soccer, the late Mick Noonan served with distinction as Chairman of the LDMC and of Pike Rovers.
He spent a lifetime giving selfless service to the sport he loved. He was one of the guiding forces when the LDMC Priory Park (now Jackman Park).

Up to that point, Limerick junior soccer was homeless, with finals being fixed in venues around the town such as Cals Park, Shelbourne Park or the Markets Field to name a few.
As a member of the LDMC he took time off work to represent clubs at FAI and MFA meetings and when he stepped back from the committee in 2011, he left with the respect of all clubs.
An ever-present at any game in local headquarters, up to a week ago Mick could be seen on the sidelines still supporting 'the Hoops'. His absence will leave a big void in soccer circles.
Although he was always one to shun the limelight, he did accept the James Flanagan Award for a lifetime service in 2023 and in 2001 he was recognised as a Limerick Sports Advisory award winner.
At that time his old friend Brian O’Brien wrote of him: “Few could calculate the voluntary work, hours and service that this man has given to soccer in the region and if there is a better unsung hero in the city or county, then he or she must be exceptional indeed.”
Condolences to all his family, friends and club mates at this sad time. The late Mick Noonan is deeply regretted by his children Mary Kennedy, John, Mike and Joanne Kelly, ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, brother Pat, sisters Nancy Hoban and Geraldine McInerney, sisters-in-law Anne Abbs and Olive Noonan, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.
Following Requiem Mass on today, Tuesday, at St. Brigid's Church, St Patrick's Road, funeral takes place at Mount St Lawrence (extension) Cemetery.
