OSCAR TRAYNOR TROPHY
Limerick District League 2 Waterford District League 1
LIMERICK District League qualified for a home quarter final in the Oscar Traynor Trophy after an impressive 2-1 win over a fancied Waterford XI in Fermoy on Sunday afternoon.
A goal in each half by man of the match Leon Daly proved enough for Limerick despite a number of setbacks.
Captain Conor Coughlan was forced out of the squad with appendicitis in midweek and John Lysaght’s side also lost the influential Adam Lipper and goalkeeper Stephen McNamara in the first half.
Despite these hurdles Limerick held on for a win that will see them host the Kilkenny DL for a place in the last four.
Limerick started well and Daly gave notice of the threat he posed after just four minutes, firing narrowly wide of the target.
After 18 minutes Josh Toomey and Tom Kidd combined to pick out Joel Coustrain in the area but his shot was parried to safety by Craig Dunphy in the Waterford goal.
Two minutes later Limerick opened the scoring. Elliah O’Riordan played Joey Rushe down the left who whipped a ball into the area for Vinny Ryan to cushion the ball to Daly to fire home.
Limerick’s joy was dampened when they lost Lipper and McNamara and after the restart they had to withstand some serious pressure.
The pressure eased somewhat on 63 minutes when Tommy Frawley picked out Shane Walsh and his ball into Daly saw the winger take the ball on his chest and volley past Dunphy.
Waterford pressed to get back into the tie and got their reward seven minutes from time when Ciaran Hodanu.
With Limerick waiting for the final whistle the opposition created one more chance in injury time but Shane Pearse made a crucial goal line save to secure the win.

PREMIER LEAGUE
Mungret Regional 0 Fairview Rangers 3
PREMIER League leaders Fairview Rgs opened up an eight-point lead at the top of the table on a cold Sunday morning when they beat Mungret Regional rather comfortably with three goals to spare.
The home side were not found wanting for effort but the visitors dominated throughout and once they got the vital breakthrough midway through the first half it was always going to be an away win.
With just nine games remaining, the finishing line starts coming into view but the Fairview management team will be wise enough to keep the players focused on the now, particularly with their rivals Pike Rvs having three games in hand. From the off Fairview were on the front foot but were having difficulty breaking down a resolute defence.
At the other end the pace of the visitors back four snuffed out any danger before it reached goalkeeper Josh McCarthy.
The deadlock was broken after the half hour mark from a corner kick. Shane Duggan’s deft delivery was met by Jason Cross and although it lacked power it still sneaked through a crowded goalmouth.
The lead was doubled ten minutes later again a set piece proving Mungret’s undoing.
Another superb delivery from Duggan saw Brian Aherne head home from point blank range.
After the break Mungret emerged with more determination and produced a number of half chances but their efforts’ were thwarted when Blake Curran’s touchline delivery to the back post was bundled over the line by Aherne.
