LIMERICK striker Shane Clarke achieved a remarkable milestone when scoring in Janesboro’s 3-1 win over Cahir Park last month.
With that goal, prolific goalscorer Clarke reached a total of 600 goals in 503 appearances at the top level of football.
To average 1.19 goals per game over an 18-year career is a truly exceptional feat, highlighting not only his talent but also his remarkable consistency. Scoring at that rate is a rarity, and Clarke’s place in the record books is secure—he may be waiting a long time before another player joins him in the exclusive '600 Club.'
When looking back at the prolific scorers of the past few decades, names like Jimmy Sheehan, Conor Lynch, Robert Earls, and earlier legends like the Geraldines duo of Gerry Cussen and Gerry Bourke, Paddy Koyce, Johnny Mullane, Tommy Meehan, and Gerry Hough come to mind.
While all were brilliant in their own right, none have matched the sustained excellence of Clarke, whose goal-scoring record stands out above them all.
Clarke's football journey began with the dominant Wembley Youth side, and it was no surprise when he made the move back to his hometown club, Janesboro, the following season.
Over a decade of unparalleled success with the club saw him cement his status as one of the region’s most feared strikers.
His career then took him to Aisling and later Pike Rovers, where his knack for finding the net continued unabated.
This season, Shane’s return to Janesboro has coincided with a resurgence to the top of the goal-scoring charts once again.
But Clarke’s contributions have extended beyond his club career— he has also played a crucial role in the success of the Oscar Traynor and International sides, adding yet another layer of achievement to his memorable career.
Even after all his success, Shane Clarke remains hungry for more, and he believes there is still plenty more to come.
With a career marked by excellence, he has set a standard that may stand for generations to come.
