The Limerick District League side which defeated the Kerry League in the Oscar Traynor Trophy at Jackman Park on Sunday
OSCAR TRAYNOR TROPHY:
Limerick District League 4 Kerry District League 1
LIMERICK District League eased to victory over their Kerry counterparts to ensure passage to the next phase of the competition following a 4-1 win at Jackman Park on Sunday afternoon.
It was a hugely impressive performance by John Lysaght’s side who lead the group going into the last round of games, needing a draw to ensure they top the table which would guarantee them a home semi final in the Munster region.
Limerick were on the front foot from the off with Limerick keeper Josh Coady a mere spectator for most of the game.
Limerick were dominant in all areas and it was only when the home side opted to make a number of chances when four goals up that they lost their shape which allowed the visitors some breathing space.
The home side took the lead midway through the opening half. Joel Coustrain picked out Vinny Ryan and he centred the ball for Shane Walsh who was fouled on his second attempt. The resultant spot kick was expertly tucked away by Coustrain.
Limerick doubled their lead ten minutes later when Vinny Ryan headed home at the back post from a good Conor Coughlan delivery.
The game was killed off as a contest five minutes from the break when Coughlan provided another ball across goal. Coustrain gathered and with nimble footwork wrongfooted defender and keeper before firing in from an acute angle.
After the restart, Limerick tacked on a fourth and again Coughlan provided the cross. The ball fell to Leon Daly whose first effort was blocked by Matt Keane, but the speedy winger followed up to blast the rebound past Robert Birdsall in the Kerry goal.
Following a number of changes, Limerick lost their stranglehold on the game and Kerry got some reward for their efforts when Shane Lowth’s cross was deflected by Adam Lipper past his keeper Josh Coady.
The visitors, with Graham O’Reilly to the fore, continued to press but were unable to get any further joy against a solid Limerick rearguard.
