DREAMS, wren boys, the menstrual cycle, swing dancing and 1920s movies are among the key influences of collections created by award-winning graduates shortly to be launched in Limerick.

Fashion Design and Knitwear and Textiles graduates from the Limerick School of Art and Design LIT will unveil their debut collections at an exhibition opening on Thursday May 9.

Sustainability and recycling are among the key themes of several collections in this year’s exhibit which will also include the preview of the 2019 BA Fashion Design graduate collection film.

Styled by leading fashion stylist Kieran Kilgallon, the collection film was shot by filmmaker Albert Hooi.

This year’s 23 BA Fashion Design graduating student group includes Holly Rose Twomey, who won the 2019 Irish Fashion Innovation Awards Student Designer of the Year Award.

The BA Fashion Design Students have also had another very successful year of international work placements all over the world in global designers’ studios including Ellery in Australia, Simone Rocha London, Nanette Lapore New York, IRO Paris, McQueen London and Game of Thrones Belfast.

The BA Fashion Design course is the only Irish fashion design course selected to show at London Graduate Week.

This will be the third graduating class of the newer BA (Hons) Degree in Fashion, Knitwear and Textile. 11 students will exhibit a selection of innovative textiles they have created alongside a single look from their garment collection.

These graduate students took their inspiration from an array of themes, ranging from a trip to Ethiopia, to vintage Street Fighter graphics to the overlooked ‘Girls’ of the Glasgow Style. Their work has been produced through a mix of traditional hand skills, machine methods and cutting-edge methods.

A collaboration between students from the course and Creative Media and Design students from LIT Clonmel, will also feature in a second multimedia fashion showcase. Photography of these students’ work was shot by acclaimed photographer Johnny Savage. The launch of Unwrap Fashion Event takes place at 5.00pm on Thursday May 9 at the Limerick School of Art and Design, Clare Street.
