Council has no power to remove car in Limerick with multiple parking tickets

LIMERICK City and County Council says it has no legal authority to impound a car which appears to have been abandoned near the social welfare offices at Dominic Street.

Almost a dozen parking tickets have been issued by traffic wardens who have come across the green-coloured Honda CRV which has been parked in an on-street space for some time. At least one ticket has been issued for non-display of tax.

The insurance for the 00D-registered car expired on March 31 while the NCT and tax expired last August.

“The Traffic Department has no powers to remove, store or dispose of vehicles for non-display of vehicle registration certification or outstanding parking or traffic offences.  It can only be removed for obstruction of traffic or access/egress obstruction,” said a spokesperson for the local authority.
