Kayleigh Maher gearing up for the abseil down Thomond Park this Saturday

BEFORE handing over her sash to the new Limerick Rose this weekend, Kayleigh Maher will be one of over 40 people to abseil down Thomond Park.

The abseil this Saturday has been organised to raise funds for Adapt Domestic Abuse Services, and it will be the last engagement for Kayleigh as Rose.

That’s because the Limerick Rose Selection Night is also taking place at Thomond Park later on the same evening.

Kilcornan native Kayleigh has climbed mountains throughout Ireland, and has reached the summit of Mount Sinai in Egypt. She has even scaled the highest climbing wall in Vietnam.

But her next challenge is very close to home, when she takes on an abseil down the local rugby stadium.

Based in Rosbrien, Adapt supports women and children affected by domestic abuse in Limerick, including emergency refuge accommodation and a 24/7 helpline.

“Kayleigh has been a wonderful ambassador for Limerick and we are delighted to have her taking part in the Abseil for Adapt event, particularly as she’ll be swapping her abseiling gear for her sash later that day for the 2018 Limerick Rose of Tralee Selection Night at the stadium,” said Adapt’s Lorraine Gallagher.

Limerick FC will also be making the trip from Markets Field to the home of Munster Rugby on Saturday, when members of the management team are due to scale the stadium.

Limerick FC manager Tommy Barrett, assistant manager Willie Boland and strength and conditioning coach Joe Gamble have committed to taking part in the event.

Cllr Elena Secas is also taking on the challenge.

“We are absolutely delighted to have the support of Limerick FC for our fundraising abseil,” said Ms Gallagher.

“Over 40 participants have already signed up, including groups of sisters, cousins, friends and co-workers, all spurring each other on to conquer their fear of heights!”

Ahead of the Abseil for Adapt, a fundraising collection will take place at Markets Field this Friday when Limerick FC take on Bray Wanderers at 7.45pm.

The 2018 Limerick Rose Selection Night is on at 7pm on Saturday at Thomond Park Stadium, and promises to be a more elegant affair than the other events of the day.

Doors open at 6:15pm and tickets are €25 – all funds raised from the raffle will go to Pieta House.
