A LIMERICK-based woman, who was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 13-months-old, is helping organise a national awareness event this October.

The annual event, Thriveabetes, is led by an organisation with the same name and aims “to bring people with diabetes together so that no one feels alone”.

The volunteer group leading the event includes Aisling White, who lives and works in Limerick city as a primary school teacher in a school for children with additional needs.

The organisation Thriveabetes was founded by two individuals who live with type 1 diabetes and they now have nine volunteers, including Aisling.

Also involved in running the Limerick Adults with Type 1 Diabetes Support Group, which meets regularly in the city, Aisling participated in the International Diabetes Federation Europe’s Youth Leadership Programme and the One Young World Leadership Platform, in 2022.

“A distinguishing feature of Thriveabetes is its peer-led and community-driven approach,” organisers say.

“Our peer-led model ensures that Thriveabetes is deeply relevant and responsive to the needs of the community.

“We understand first-hand the challenges of living with diabetes, which allows us to create programmes and resources that resonate on a personal level with participants.”

This is the seventh conference since its creation in 2015. The conference is open to adults, young adults and parents with children living with type 1 diabetes.

The event also includes an exhibition involving companies that provide diabetes devices to the community, as well as some small diabetes businesses.

Thriveabetes was created to offer somewhere people with diabetes could connect with others like them and, “because of the unmet need”, to discuss the psychological aspects of living with the condition.

This year’s annual event takes place on Saturday, October 5, in The Midlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise, Co Laois.
