Potential Future Appearance of Cornmarket Row, Limerick
AN UPGRADE project for Limerick city centre shopping streets has been put forward, with the hopes of “revitalising the area”.
Described as “key locations”, Limerick City and County Council is inviting the people of Limerick to offer ideas on how Market Quarter and Cruises Street should be upgraded.
Members of the public are invited to participate in non-statutory public consultations regarding the proposed Public Realm Upgrade project.
Limerick Council’s objectives for the project are “to make the Market Quarter and the Milk Market key locations, improve connectivity between O’Connell Street, Cruise’s Street, Arthur’s Quay, Opera Square and The Market Quarter, and improve safety and accessibility in the area.”
The council also aims to increase cycling and pedestrian movement within the city centre, improve green spaces and water environments, increase commercial occupancy and economic growth and improve liveability in the city.

A non-statutory public consultation period will run until Wednesday, October 9. A public event is being held on September 24 in the University of Limerick (UL) City Campus, Sarsfield Street Limerick, from 1pm to 7:30pm.
This is to offer those who attend the chance to look at, and provide feedback on, preliminary drawings and a proposed potential layout for the project.
Mayor of Limerick, John Moran is inviting members of the public to have their say on how the future of this heritage area should transform over the coming years.
“This is another of a very important set of public consultations which we are rolling out to inform the work of the five-year Mayoral Programme,” he said.
“This consultation follows on the one which is on-going on King’s Island and will be closely followed by the associated framework discussions for Arthur’s Quay area.
“Together, they will help us formulate a fully up to date and integrated view of how these key areas in our city centre need to evolve.”
Mayor Moran said by contributing ideas and feedback, members of the public “are playing a vital role in creating public spaces that enhance the attractiveness of our city centre”.
“We know that improved streets and public areas boost the city’s appeal for residents and visitors. But sometimes, knowing all of the concerns is hard. That is why your feedback is essential,” he said.
People in Limerick can submit their feedback in writing to FAO Place Making Department, Limerick City and County Council Offices, Merchants Quay. Alternatively, they can do so online via MyPoint on or before 8pm on Wednesday, October 9, or in-person at the consultation event on Tuesday, September 24.
Director of service with the place making team at Limerick City and County Council, Vincent Murray, said: “This proposed public realm project represents a significant investment in the heart of our city, aimed at enhancing the vibrancy and accessibility of the Market Quarter and Cruises Street areas.
“The consultation process will provide an opportunity for local residents, businesses and stakeholders alike, to engage with and provide feedback on the proposed concepts.
“We are committed to ensuring that the implementation of this public realm project reflects the needs and aspirations of all, and your input will play a crucial role in shaping the final design.”
The proposed project is being delivered by LCCC’s Place Making Department and is being funded by the Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF) as well as the National Transport Authority (NTA).
