THERE were scenes of jubilation at Limerick Racecourse on Saturday as 11 candidates were elected to Limerick City and County Council.
Initial tallies gave a good indication of how the elections would go with the vote proper starting at 6:30pm with the opening day of the count concluding at 1:50am on Sunday morning.
Five of the six municipal districts saw candidates elected, with all but one of the 11 councillors returning to their seat.
Peter Doyle, Fine Gael, was elected to the Limerick City East district for the first time with 1,727 first preference votes.
Fianna Fáil's Catherine Slattery retained her seat in the district and topped the poll with 1,894 first preference votes.
Over to Limerick City West and mayor hopeful Daniel Butler, Fine Gael, topped the poll with 2,233 first preference votes.
Councillor Butler's Fine Gael colleague Dan McSweeney was deemed elected with 1,725 first preference votes.
No candidates were elected to the Limerick City North constituency on the first count with the second count due to take place on Sunday morning.
Heading to the county, there was more success for Fine Gael in Adare - Rathkeale with Stephen Keary and Adam Teskey elected on the first count.
In Cappamore - Kilmallock Brigid Teefy was at the top of the poll with 2,672 first preference votes followed closely by Fianna Fáil's Martin Ryan.
Finally in Newcastle West, three candidates were elected on the first count as Jerome Scanlan, Non - Party, topped the polls with 2,301 first preference votes.
Fine Gael's Liam Galvin took 2,257 first preference votes and Fianna Fáil's Michael Collins was also elected with 2, 012 votes.
The second count resumed at 10am on Sunday morning with the mayoral count starting on Monday morning.
