‘Potential safety risk’: US bound flight forced to land in Shannon Airport

A US bound flight had to make an emergency landing into Shannon Airport, due to a “potential safety risk”.

A United Airlines flight heading from Zurich to Chicago had to make a stop in Shannon Airport after a passenger got their laptop wedged in their seat.

The diversion occurred at around 1pm yesterday, Sunday, May 19.

It is believed the passenger’s device could have been overheated, posing a fire risk.

The plane, a Boeing 767-322, was already far out over the Atlantic Ocean when the decision was made to double back and land at Shannon Airport.

The diversion meant that 157 passengers hoping to land at Chicago O'Hare International Airport were left waiting in Limerick Sunday afternoon.
