Judge tells Limerick teen his ‘carry-on is very concerning’ following offences

A JUDGE told a teenager “his carry-on is very concerning” and if he comes back to court again she will “give serious consideration to imposing a sentence”.

James Daly, aged 19, of Millmount, Kilmallock pleaded guilty to a number of offences at Kilmallock Court including causing criminal damage at Deebert Park, Kilmallock on October 15, 2023.

Con Barry, solicitor for Mr Daly, said compensation of €340 for the damage caused to a wing mirror of a car has been paid.

Judge Patricia Harney fined Mr Daly €50. Mr Daly pleaded guilty to threatening, abusive, insulting behaviour arising out of the same incident.

The solicitor said compensation has also been paid after his client stole a crate of Coors lager, valued at €24, from the Spar on Lord Edward Street, Kilmallock on October 6, 2023. Judge Harney fined Mr Daly €50.

Mr Daly also pleaded guilty to an assault at Riverview Estate, Kilmallock on May 24, 2023.

Inspector Fergal Hanrahan, prosecuting, said there is no victim impact statement forthcoming.

Mr Daly pleaded guilty to producing an article capable of inflicting serious injury, namely a hurley, at Deebert, Kilmallock on June 2, 2023.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing a car at a petrol station in Abbeyfeale on May 28, 2023.

Insp Hanrahan said a car was stopped at the filling station.

“The back window was smashed to gain entry. The vehicle was driven out of the service station. The car was recovered,” said Insp Hanrahan.

Judge Harney adjourned sentencing in this matter to ascertain the cost of the damage.

Judge Harney said she had read a report carried out by the Probation Service.

“Explain to me how he thinks he doesn’t have a drink problem. He doesn’t remember - he is blacking out and doing all this damage,” said Judge Harry.

Mr Barry said his client is a very young man who has had his difficulties with education.

“He does need the help and guidance of the Probation Service,” said Mr Barry.

Judge Harney said Mr Daly’s “carry-on” is very concerning.

“I have taken into account his pleas and his age. He should be under no illusion if he comes back here again he is looking at serious trouble,” said Judge Harney, who put Mr Daly on a probation bond for 12 months.

It means Mr Daly has to attend Probation Service appointments and be of good behaviour for a year.

“If you don’t, then be in no doubt I will give serious consideration to imposing a sentence,” said Judge Harney.
