OVER €38m has been allocated as part of a “much-needed funding boost” to improve local and regional roads in Limerick.
Limerick City Fine Gael TD and Minister of State Kieran O’Donnell outlined that funding of €38,178,595 which has been allocated to Limerick City and County Council in 2024 for the protection and renewal of existing regional and local road networks will be of “huge benefit” to Limerick.
As part of the funding €13m will be allocated for the Coonagh/Knockalisheen Distributor Road, €900k for Cappamore Road junction improvement, €150k for Golf Links Road and Ballysimon road upgrades, and €120k for the Park Road bridge replacement among others.
“I am pleased that Limerick City and County Council will be allocated €38,178,595 to maintain, improve and enhance our local and regional roads in 2024. These supports will be key to enhancing connectivity, supporting businesses, and making it easier and safer for families to get to and from school and work in our communities,” Mr O’Donnell said.
“This roads funding allocation includes a very welcome further €13 million for Coonagh/Knockalisheen Distributor Road Project. Additionally, I am pleased that €900,000 has been allocated to Cappamore road junction improvement, with €150,000 allocated for the Golf Links Road and Ballysimon Road upgrade as well as €25,000 for Castletroy College road and €30,000 for Skehan’s cross, Castleconnell for the purposes of safety improvement works,” he added.

A total of €658 million will be invested in roads around the country this year.
“This represents an increase of €32m for road pavement and rehabilitation works. This funding will help to maintain approximately 2,640km of regional and local roads and strengthen a further 2,160km. It will improve the quality of the road network overall,” Mr O’Donnell said.
“An important part of this allocation is the climate change adaptation grant, which will help future-proof our roads. There is now more support available for drainage works, flood protection, severe weather works and salt purchase so that we can better prepare ourselves for whatever weather conditions this year brings,” he added.
