Journalist, writer and presenter Olivia O’Leary will moderate this week's event in Limerick
AN EVENT focused on the future of Irish regional development is taking place this Wednesday in Adare.
Staff of the Association of Irish Regions have set up shop at the Woodlands House Hotel in the village for their annual conference.
Winding up at close of business on Thursday, the event brings together elected members from local authorities from across the State.
The organisers say the event will give a “comprehensive, and significant engagement on regional progress, challenges and opportunities.”
This year, the seminar and training event coincide with critical junctures in Irish planning and development, notably the new Planning and Development Bill, the review of the National Planning Framework, and the ongoing challenges posed by climate change.
Organisers say it aims to highlight the capacities of Ireland’s regions to tackle these challenges effectively.
Discussions will be moderated by top journalist, writer, and current affairs presenter, Olivia O’Leary.
Expert speakers including senior government ministers will take part.
Two local politicians will be taking an active part in the two-day event at the Adare hotel.
Minister of State for Housing and Planning, Limerick TD Kieran O’Donnell will address the event on Thursday.
The Fine Gael TD will be the opening speaker in a debate on what, if any, regional government exists in Ireland.
His party colleague, the Glin-based councillor John Sheahan will join a discussion on the misunderstood role of a member of a regional assembly.
For his part, he sits on the Southern Regional Assembly.
