LIMERICK has seen a significant drop in the number of speeding fines handed out to motorists over the past decade, figures released to Dáil Éireann have revealed.

In 2014, a total of 17,035 speeding fines were issued in Limerick while in 2023, this figure had fallen to 7,597.

This is according to figures released by way of a Parliamentary Question to Aontú’s Peadar Tóibín.

Commenting on the figures, Aontú’s Limerick representative Sarah Beasley said that “ongoing carnage on our roads can be directly linked to a fall in the number of gardaí policing our roads and the sharp decline in speeding enforcement.”

Seven people lost their lives on Limerick roads last year, which was down from 10 the year before, according to road traffic collision figures published by the Road Safety Authority (RSA) on January 1, 2024.

Separate figures from the RSA show that in 2014, there were 10 road deaths in Limerick.

“The figures for Limerick are absolutely dire,” Ms Beasley said.

“Helen McEntee has admitted that there has been a massive fall in the number of gardaí employed to police our roads.

“We are just a few short weeks into 2024 and already 11 people have died (nationally) on our roads,” she added.
