THE RESTORATION of an iconic Limerick landmark could be on the cards as members of Limerick Council heard a motion for works to be carried out on a clock tower overlooking the docks.
The motion was brought before a meeting of the Limerick Metropolitan District by Councillor Sharon Benson who called for the Council to write to Shannon Foynes Port Company and encourage them to apply for funding through the Historic Structure Fund, for the renovation of the clock tower in Limerick Docks.
The clock, designed by the harbour engineer William J. Hall, was built in 1880 and is considered a protected structure.
“The clock was a significant part of Limerick's history. A huge number of people have worked in the docks over the years. It is something that Limerick people are very proud of,” said Cllr Benson.
“So it is very disappointing to see it in this state of disrepair,” she added.
According to Councillor Elisa O’Donovan, who supported the motion, the clock was part of a set of plans launched, by the Shannon Foynes Port Company, called the Limerick Docklands Framework Strategy.
“I would welcome the Council writing to the Shannon Foynes Port Company, and asking for an update on those plans,” Cllr O’Donovan said.
