MEMBERS of the Armed Support Unit prevented a serious crime being perpetrated in Limerick this Friday after their garda jeep was rammed during a dramatic pursuit, Limerick Live has learned.

A video has emerged of the culmination of the incident in the Drombanna area. It shows a dark grey Volkswagen Golf in a ditch.

The car is being boxed in by two Armed Support Unit vehicles. Two men can be seen on the ground in handcuffs. They are surrounded by a number of armed officers.

Limerick Live understands the Armed Support Unit were on mobile patrol in the Ballysimon Road area when they observed two men in a Volkswagen Golf wearing balaclavas. They refused to stop after gardai activated their sirens and blue lights and took off in the direction of Drombanna.

A vehicle being driven by a member of the public was struck by the car occupied by the two men who are known to gardai. One line of enquiry is that the duo were on their way to commit a serious offence due to the presence of balaclavas.

An Armed Support Unit jeep was rammed during the garda pursuit on the outskirts of the city. The Volkswagen Golf was later boxed in by the armed gardai in a roadside ditch in Drombanna and its two occupants were arrested.

Following a media query from Limerick Live, a garda spokesperson said they received a report about an incident of dangerous driving that occurred in the Drombanna area of Limerick this Friday, February 27 at approximately 11 am.

“The driver of the vehicle failed to stop for gardaí. The vehicle then collided with a ditch.

“Two men, aged in their 20s, have been arrested and conveyed to a garda station in Limerick city,” said the garda spokesperson, who concluded by saying, “investigations are ongoing”.
