Town Square in Newcastle West PICTURE: ADRIAN BUTLER
CONCERNS have been raised over the lack of parking spaces in a County Limerick town, particularly leading up to Christmas.
The discussion on parking spaces was brought up at the most recent meeting of the municipal district of Newcastle West.
Fine Gael councillor, Tom Ruddle submitted a motion to ask what steps Limerick City and County Council are taking to provide parking in Newcastle West.
“We have recently lost 25 car park spaces in the Aldi car park. Going from 105 spaces from what they got in the original planning permission, this is reduced down to about 80,” Mr Ruddle said in his motion.
“Also we have lost parking in other parts of town - Dooley's new supermarket extension. It is incumbent on the council to provide adequate parking within walking distance of the town centre. The new draft public realm plans also show a reduction of car parking in the square,” he added.
Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Collins asked senior executive engineer, for transportation and mobility at LCCC, John Sheehan to engage with the community centre in the town for the use of parking over Christmas.
Mr Sheehan said the community centre will provide parking as long as the council provide public lighting in the area but this most likely won’t be done before Christmas.
In reply to Mr Ruddle’s motion, Mr Sheehan said: “In conjunction with the public realm plan, LCCC can look at alternative parking arrangements and consider options available to them.”
