LIMERICK is expected to receive a total of 34 fully-electric buses procured by the National Transport Authority (NTA) to operate among the Bus Éireann city services.

The double-deck battery buses will begin to arrive on-site at the Roxboro depot in December to facilitate testing and driver training.

“Works are ongoing to install the infrastructure required to charge the buses at the depot facility and it is expected that the necessary charging equipment and power upgrade will be in place as planned,” a spokesperson for Bus Éireann told the Limerick Leader.

“The new bus fleet will help ensure a more sustainable public transport network in Limerick.”

The announcement follows the signing of a €3m contract between Bus Éireann and Hitachi for the electrification of the Limerick depot, to support the fleet of electric buses.

Hitachi was contracted back in May of this year to deliver a new on-site MV electricity substation, install 24 charge points, and the commissioning of the charging infrastructure at the depot.

These plans were put in place to make Limerick the first regional city in Ireland to introduce fully electric vehicles, combined with the current fleet of hybrid vehicles in operation. It is expected that the TFI Limerick city fleet will be either zero or low tailpipe emissions from early 2024.

At the time of the Hitachi announcement, Stephen Kent, chief executive officer of Bus Éireann said: “We are very pleased to partner with Hitachi in the delivery of this project. The electrification of the depot at Roxboro will really change public transport in Limerick for the better, in terms of environmental impact and also a greatly enhanced customer experience with quieter, smoother journeys.

“Combined with the NTA’s BusConnects and investment in a new bus station at Colbert, Limerick will be in the forefront of bus public transport developments this year,” he added.
