A SHARED pedestrian and cycle path, in a built-up Limerick city area, is ‘on the road’ to being built.
Construction of new Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) Active Travel infrastructure along the Mill Road in Corbally, is to commence later this month.
The project will consist of an off-road shared pedestrian/cycle facility from Corbally Road junction to the River Shannon viewing area.
The scheme is approximately 1.4km in length and will include traffic calming measures, such as raised pedestrian crossings.
“It is going to be a really important piece of infrastructure for those living in the area and it is exciting to see it going to construction,” said Sean McGlynn, senior engineer with the LCCC Active Travel team.
“This project will ultimately allow people living in the vicinity of the Mill Road to walk or cycle to school or work in a safer manner when it’s completed.
“In the long term, the scheme will be a key connector and deliver significant benefits to the area.”
The works are expected to take 18 months to complete and will run from Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm and on occasional Saturdays, from 9am to 1pm.
A traffic management system will be in place for the duration of the works. This may include temporary traffic lights, flagmen etc and will be subject to the specific requirements of the works area.
Mr McGlynn concluded by saying that the Active Travel team “appreciates the patience” of local residents, and “their co-operation” in the coming months will be acknowledged.
The project received an allocation of €800,000 in funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) in 2023, having been allocated just over €1 million in 2022.
The Corbally Road safe routes to school scheme recently received planning permission. These works will involve widening footpaths and raising crossings and kerb height.
