TWO YOUNG women from the region have been awarded third-level bursaries by a Limerick-based engineering company.

Limerick’s Anna Carr, who is studying mechanical engineering at the National University of Ireland in Galway has been accepted onto Kirby Group Engineering’s third-level bursary programme, which was launched by the company last year.

She is joined by Alannah O’Connell from Clare, who is studying renewable and electrical engineering at the Technological University of the Shannon.

Bursaries have also been awarded to three other students, as part of Kirby’s drive to promote the sector among female students.

Kirby Group was founded in Limerick by brothers Tom and Michael Kirby in 1964, and is headquartered in the Raheen Industrial Estate.

The company, which also operates across Ireland, Britain, mainland Europe and South Africa, directly employs more than 1,400 people.

The bursary programme which Ms O'Connell and Ms Carr are now on was open to females studying electrical, mechanical or building services engineering at third level institutions in Ireland.

This year’s winners were chosen following a selection process by Kirby management.

The recipients will receive a full scholarship to cover the academic year 2023/24, as well as paid professional placements on Kirby’s engineering projects.

The students will also benefit from professional mentorship from senior engineers.

The other three students are Leah McElvaney from Monaghan, Ciara McMillan from Wexford and DuEllie Fox from Dublin.
