CONSTRUCTION of a new boundary wall along the edge of a Limerick southside graveyard is to commence.
For many years, Mount St Oliver graveyard at Crossagalla has become a haven for anti-social behaviour.
On top of this, horses have wandered in from nearby estates destroying the area around the graves of loved ones and troubling mourners.
But now, more than two years after councillors approved the proposals for the works, building is set to get under way.
And it’s hoped it will bring an end to these issues.
The wall will run from the entrance to St Enda’s up to the Willows at Old Cork Road. It will measure around nine feet tall.
City East councillor Catherine Slattery has welcomed the fact builders will be on site and are expected this week.
“I have been fighting for the wall since 2018 as a resident and community activist and secured capital funding when elected in 2019. I have a special interest in this project as it was my first and in my own area and I'm delighted it's finally starting,” she said.
Cllr Slattery said the works could take up to a year, and acknowledged it will cause some disruption to motorists in the community.
She pledged to lobby local authority staff to keep this to a minimum.
